Miraculous Healings

Brother Artemides Zatti, Salesian coadjutor and nurse in Argentina, was canonized October 9, 2022. Pope Francis approved a second miracle in April 2022—a Spanish girl was healed through Zatti's intercession. The beneficiary attended the canonization and received a special greeting from the Pope at an audience with Salesian pilgrims.

Father Juan Gutierrez, then a seminarian at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, California, tore his Achilles tendon playing basketball in September 2017. An MRI confirmed the injury. He prayed a novena to Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati; days later he felt warmth at the injury site while praying before the tabernacle. The tear had disappeared—his surgeon said it was unheard of. Dafne Gutierrez, a Phoenix mother of four, was completely blind from idiopathic intracranial hypertension and optic nerve damage. After praying before St. Charbel's relics, going to confession, and being blessed with holy oil at St. Joseph Maronite Church, her vision was restored to 20/20 within days. Dr. Anne Borik and a medical committee found no medical explanation.

Highly documented. Five-year-old Jacob Sebest drowned and was diagnosed with irreversible brain trauma. His complete recovery was tracked through modern pediatric ICU records. The diocesan tribunal compiled a 1,204-page dossier of medical evidence and witness testimony.

Exceptionally well-documented. Michael Schachle was diagnosed in utero with fatal fetal hydrops and Down syndrome. Zero survival prognosis. Anna Santaniello, 42 years old, was cured of Fatal rheumatic heart disease at Lourdes in 1952. Recognized by the Bishop of Salerno on 2005.

Sr. Marie Simon-Pierre had Parkinson's disease since 2001; it severely impaired her work as a maternity nurse. After John Paul II's death, her community prayed for his intercession. Extremely well-documented. Toguchi had terminal liposarcoma (a rare cancer) that had metastasized to her lungs. Her oncologist, Dr. Walter Chang, thoroughly documented her biopsies, CT scans, and X-rays, demonstrating a spontaneous, complete regression of the tumors without treatment.

An ovarian tumor witnessed by doctors. A skeptical doctor initially claimed tuberculosis, but ultrasound records show the mass vanishing. On the first anniversary of Mother Teresa's death, nuns prayed with a medallion that had touched her body; the tumor disappeared.

Uniquely well-documented because the patient was an orthopedic surgeon. His incurable chronic radiodermatitis and subsequent healing were meticulously recorded by his medical peers.

Carlo Acutis (1991–2006), an Italian teenager who created a website documenting Eucharistic miracles, was canonized in 2025 after two medically inexplicable healings were attributed to his intercession. In 2013, a three-year-old Brazilian boy with a rare pancreatic malformation was instantly healed after touching a relic of Acutis's clothing. In 2022, a 21-year-old Costa Rican woman with catastrophic brain trauma made a complete recovery after her mother prayed at Acutis's tomb in Assisi.

Ginette Nouvel (Fabre), 26 years old, was cured of Budd-Chiari disease (supra-hepatic venous thrombosis) at Lourdes in 1954. Recognized by the Bishop of Albi on 31 May 1963.

Documented by 1960s oncology standards. A 6-year-old boy diagnosed with terminal Ewing's sarcoma (bone cancer) experienced a complete disappearance of the cancer, verified by comparative X-rays and long-term follow-ups.

Yvonne Fournier, 22 years old, was cured of Extending post-traumatic syndrome of left upper limb (Leriche's syndrome) at Lourdes in 1945. Recognized by the Bishop of Paris on 14 November 1959.

Lydia Brosse, 41 years old, was cured of Multiple tuberculous fistulae with wide undermining in the left buttock at Lourdes in 1930. Recognized by the Bishop of Coutances on 5 August 1958.

Rose Martin (Perona), 46 years old, was cured of Cancer of the uterine cervix (epithelioma) at Lourdes in 1947. Recognized by the Bishop of Nice on 17 March 1958.

Solidly documented for its era. The healing from terminal reticulum cell sarcoma relies on 1950s hospital charts, biopsy results confirming the cancer, and physician testimonies submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

Documented by mid-century medical standards. Fusco was dying of leukemia. His mother dreamed of a doctor in a white coat; she identified Moscati from a photograph. Fusco was cured and attended the 1987 canonization.

Evasio Ganora, 37 years old, was cured of Hodgkin's disease at Lourdes in 1950. Recognized by the Bishop of Casale on 31 May 1955.

Marie Bigot, 31 years old, was cured of Arachnoiditis of posterior fossa (blindness, deafness, hemiplegia) at Lourdes in 1954. Recognized by the Bishop of Rennes on 10 October 1954.

Paul Pellegrin, 52 years old, was cured of Post-operative fistula following a liver abscess at Lourdes in 1950. Recognized by the Bishop of Fréjus-Toulon on 8 December 1953.

Documented by mid-century standards. Anne Theresa O'Neill, age 4, was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia at a time when the disease was considered always fatal. Bone marrow biopsies, blood panels, and hospital charts show sudden, inexplicable remission.

Jeanne Frétel, 34 years old, was cured of Tuberculous peritonitis at Lourdes in 1948. Recognized by the Bishop of Rennes on 20 November 1950.

Francis Pascal, 3 years 10 months, was cured of Meningitis sequelae: paralysis of lower limbs, loss of vision at Lourdes in 1938. Recognized by the Bishop of Aix-en-Provence on 31 May 1949.

Gabrielle Clauzel, 49 years old, was cured of Rheumatic spondylosis at Lourdes in 1943. Recognized by the Bishop of Oran on 18 March 1948.

Sister Marie-Marguerite (Françoise Capitaine), 64 years old, was cured of Abscess of the left kidney with phlyctenular oedema and cardiac crises at Lourdes in 1937. Recognized by the Bishop of Rennes on 20 May 1946.

Well-documented by the examining physicians present at the exhumation 57 years after her death, who verified the incorrupt state of her body and the specific preservation of her eyes and hands.

St. John Bosco's canonization in 1934 required four approved miracles across two phases. For beatification: Sr. Provina Negro was healed from a hemorrhaging stomach ulcer, and Teresa Callegari was healed from acute polyarthritis that had reduced her to severe wasting. For canonization: Anna Maccolini was healed from severe phlebitis, and Caterina Lanfranchi Pilenga was healed from chronic arthritis at the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin.

Virginie Haudebourg, 22 years old, was cured of Tuberculous cystitis and nephritis at Lourdes in 1908. Recognized by the Bishop of Saint-Claude on 25 November 1912.

Antonia Moulin, 30 years old, was cured of Fistulous osteomyelitis of right femur with arthritis of the knee at Lourdes in 1907. Recognized by the Bishop of Grenoble on 6 November 1911.

Marie Borel, 27 years old, was cured of Six faecal fistulae in the lumbar and abdominal region at Lourdes in 1907. Recognized by the Bishop of Mende on 4 June 1911.

Aimée Allope, 37 years old, was cured of Multiple tuberculous abscesses with four fistulae on the anterior abdominal wall at Lourdes in 1909. Recognized by the Bishop of Angers on 5 August 1910.

Amélie Chagnon, 17 years old, was cured of Tuberculous osteo-arthritis of the knee and second metatarsal of the foot at Lourdes in 1891. Recognized by the Bishop of Tournai on 8 September 1910.

Marie Biré (Lucas), 41 years old, was cured of Blindness of cerebral origin; bilateral optic atrophy at Lourdes in 1908. Recognized by the Bishop of Luçon on 30 July 1910.

Cécile Douville de Franssu, 19 years old, was cured of Tuberculous peritonitis; tuberculous arthritis of the knee at Lourdes in 1905. Recognized by the Bishop of Versailles on 8 December 1909.

Aurélie Huprelle, 26 years old, was cured of Acute cavitating pulmonary tuberculosis at Lourdes in 1895. Recognized by the Bishop of Beauvais on 1 May 1908.

Clementine Malot, 25 years old, was cured of Pulmonary tuberculosis with haemoptysis at Lourdes in 1898. Recognized by the Bishop of Beauvais on 1 November 1908.

Clementine Trouvé (Sister Agnes-Marie), 14 years old, was cured of Osteoperiostitis of the right foot with fistulae at Lourdes in 1891. Recognized by the Bishop of Paris on 6 June 1908.

Elise Lesage, 18 years old, was cured of Tuberculous osteo-arthritis of the knee at Lourdes in 1892. Recognized by the Bishop of Arras on 4 February 1908.

Esther Brachmann, 15 years old, was cured of Tuberculous peritonitis at Lourdes in 1896. Recognized by the Bishop of Paris on 6 June 1908.

Father Salvator (Capuchin), 38 years old, was cured of Pulmonary tuberculosis; tuberculous peritonitis at Lourdes in 1900. Recognized by the Bishop of Rennes on 1 July 1908.

Joachime Dehant, 29 years old, was cured of Ulcer of the right leg with extensive gangrene (10+ years) at Lourdes in 1878. Recognized by the Bishop of Namur on 25 April 1908.

Johanna Bezenac (Dubos), 28 years old, was cured of Cachexia and lupus of the face (probably tuberculous) at Lourdes in 1904. Recognized by the Bishop of Périgueux on 2 July 1908.

Marie Lebranchu (Mrs Wu Plier), 35 years old, was cured of Pulmonary tuberculosis (Koch's bacilli present in sputum) at Lourdes in 1892. Recognized by the Bishop of Paris on 6 June 1908.

Marie Lemarchand (Mrs Authier), 18 years old, was cured of Pulmonary tuberculosis with ulcers of the face and legs at Lourdes in 1892. Recognized by the Bishop of Paris on 6 June 1908.

Marie Savoye, 24 years old, was cured of Rheumatic mitral valvular heart disease at Lourdes in 1901. Recognized by the Bishop of Cambrai on 15 August 1908.

Marie-Therese Noblet, 15 years old, was cured of Pott's disease (tuberculosis of the spine) at Lourdes in 1905. Recognized by the Bishop of Reims on 2 November 1908.

Pierre de Rudder, 52 years old, was cured of Ununited fracture of the left leg with pseudarthrosis (8 years) at Lourdes in 1875. Recognized by the Bishop of Bruges on 25 July 1908.

Rose Francois (Labreeuvoies), 36 years old, was cured of Fistular lymphangitis of the right arm with enormous oedema at Lourdes in 1899. Recognized by the Bishop of Paris on 6 June 1908.

Sister Eugenia (Marie Mabille), 28 years old, was cured of Abscess in the right iliac fossa with vesical and colic fistulae; bilateral phle… at Lourdes in 1883. Recognized by the Bishop of Evreux on 30 August 1908.

Sister Josephine-Marie (Anne Jourdain), 36 years old, was cured of Pulmonary tuberculosis with gross apical lesions at Lourdes in 1890. Recognized by the Bishop of Beauvais on 10 October 1908.

Sister Marie de la Presentation (Sylvanie Delporte), 46 years old, was cured of Chronic tuberculous gastroenteritis at Lourdes in 1893. Recognized by the Bishop of Cambrai on 15 August 1908.

Sister Maximilien, 43 years old, was cured of Hydatid cyst of the liver with phlebitis of the left leg at Lourdes in 1901. Recognized by the Bishop of Marseille on 5 February 1908.

Sister Saint-Hilaire, 39 years old, was cured of Chronic gastroenteritis; abdominal tumour at Lourdes in 1904. Recognized by the Bishop of Rodez on 10 May 1908.

Sister Sainte-Beatrix (Rosalie Vildier), 42 years old, was cured of Laryngo-bronchitis (probably tuberculous) at Lourdes in 1904. Recognized by the Bishop of Evreux on 25 March 1908.

Father Cirette, 46 years old, was cured of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis of the spinal cord at Lourdes in 1893. Recognized by the Bishop of Evreux on 2 November 1907.

Jeanne Tulasne, 20 years old, was cured of Lumbar Pott's disease with bone abscess, muscular atrophy, and clubfoot at Lourdes in 1897. Recognized by the Bishop of Tours on 27 October 1907.

In 1902, Marie Bailly, a 23-year-old woman dying of tubercular peritonitis, was healed at the Lourdes grotto while being observed by Dr. Alexis Carrel — then an agnostic surgeon who would later win the Nobel Prize in Medicine (1912). Carrel documented the healing minute by minute: her massively distended abdomen flattened, her racing pulse stabilized, and her blue complexion turned rosy — all within thirty minutes. The experience nearly destroyed his academic career in France's anticlerical medical establishment, but he refused to recant what he had witnessed.

Fortuna Agrelli, 12, suffered from three incurable diseases in 1884. After her family prayed the Rosary at the Pompeii shrine founded by Bartolo Longo, she had a vision of the Virgin with St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena. She was instructed to pray three novenas in petition and three in thanksgiving. On May 8, 1884, she was completely cured. This became the origin of the 54-day Rosary novena. Longo was canonized October 19, 2025.

Among the most famously documented miracles of the 20th century. Traynor was a World War I veteran with paralysis, epilepsy, and severe shrapnel wounds. His case is uniquely verifiable through the Lourdes Medical Bureau's examinations and the British military pension board's continuous evaluations prior to his cure.

Blaisette Cazenave, 50 years old, was cured of Chronic conjunctivitis with bilateral ectropion for three years at Lourdes in 1858. Recognized by the Bishop of Tarbes on 18 January 1862.

Catherine Latapie-Chouat, 38 years old, was cured of Ulnar paralysis due to traumatic elongation of the brachial plexus for 18 months at Lourdes in 1858. Recognized by the Bishop of Tarbes on 18 January 1862.

Henri Busquet, 15 years old, was cured of Fistular adenitis of the base of the neck (tuberculous) for 15 months at Lourdes in 1858. Recognized by the Bishop of Tarbes on 18 January 1862.

Justin Bouhort, 2 years old, was cured of Chronic post-infective malnutrition with retarded motor development; 'consumptio… at Lourdes in 1858. Recognized by the Bishop of Tarbes on 18 January 1862.

Louis Bouriette, 54 years old, was cured of Complete loss of vision in the right eye for two years from a mining accident at Lourdes in 1858. Recognized by the Bishop of Tarbes on 18 January 1862.

Madeleine Rizan, 58 years old, was cured of Left hemiplegia for 24 years following cholera at Lourdes in 1858. Recognized by the Bishop of Tarbes on 18 January 1862.

Marie Moreau, 17 years old, was cured of Major diminution of vision with inflammatory lesions of the right eye, progressi… at Lourdes in 1858. Recognized by the Bishop of Tarbes on 18 January 1862.

In 1640, Miguel Pellicer's right leg—amputated two and a half years earlier in Zaragoza—was restored while he slept. The leg was identified by scars and the hospital cemetery grave was found empty. Twenty-four witnesses, including the amputating surgeons, testified under oath. David Hume's criteria for a convincing miracle are arguably met; modern orthopaedic analysis confirms the clinical details match limb replantation.
