What Was Truly Miraculous

From age 22 Marie suffered attacks of acute appendicitis. After an operation in 1903, an abscess formed; a fistula developed. From 1905 other abscesses appeared; they invaded the colon and discharged onto the abdominal walls—the normal path of stools was entirely re-routed. On the morning of 21 August 1907 the dressings over the fistulae were changed. In the evening, the four on the anterior wall had closed. The next day, the two on the posterior wall had closed when she came out of the Baths. At the M.B.V. The Bishop of Mende officially recognized the cure as miraculous on 4 June 1911.

Why It Can't Be Dismissed

The Lourdes Medical Bureau gathered documentation; the International Medical Committee (C.M.I.L.) affirmed the cure was inexplicable in the current state of medical knowledge. The Bishop of Mende recognized it on 4 June 1911. Chronic fistulas typically require surgery. Complete spontaneous closure of multiple fistulae is medically unusual.
