What Was Truly Miraculous
From age 10 the disease appeared in different sites. She spent long periods in sanatoria until 20, then was treated at home for 8 years without improvement. In 1948 a report described her deplorable state: incurable, with coronary insufficiency, weighing 32 kg. On 15 August she experienced a sudden improvement in front of the Grotto. Doctors concluded "we are in the presence of a cure contrary to all logical reasoning." Cardinal Montini (future Pope Paul VI) declared it "certainly a miraculous fact" in 1960.
Why It Can't Be Dismissed
The Lourdes Medical Bureau gathered documentation; the International Medical Committee (C.M.I.L.) affirmed the cure was inexplicable in the current state of medical knowledge. The Bishop of Milan recognized it on 2 June 1960. Tuberculosis was the leading cause of death before antibiotics. Rapid, complete cure without drugs is medically unexplained.
