What Was Truly Miraculous
Audrey Toguchi had liposarcoma removed from her left buttock, then radiation. Three aggressive tumors appeared in her lungs in September 1998. Dr. Chang gave her less than six months to live and recommended chemotherapy. Instead, she traveled to Molokai to pray at Damien's grave. By May 1999, the lung tumors had completely disappeared without any medical treatment.
Why It Can't Be Dismissed
Dr. Walter Chang documented biopsies, CT scans, and X-rays. A team of physicians—cardiologist, oncologist, pathologist, radiologist—could not medically explain the recovery. Dr. Chang, who does not belong to any religion, encouraged Toguchi to report the case to the Church. Spontaneous, complete regression of metastatic liposarcoma without chemotherapy or radiation is medically unprecedented.
