Healing of Sister Marie de la Presentation (Sylvanie Delporte)
Lourdes, France · 20th Century

What Was Truly Miraculous
Sister Marie de la Presentation suffered from chronic tuberculous gastroenteritis—tuberculosis of the digestive tract. She was bedridden and emaciated. She traveled to Lourdes in 1893 and was immersed in the Baths. When she emerged, all signs of illness had vanished. She could walk and take food. She resumed her religious duties and followed the Rule for the next 24 years. The Bishop of Cambrai declared the cure miraculous in 1908.
Why It Can't Be Dismissed
The Lourdes Medical Bureau gathered documentation; the International Medical Committee (C.M.I.L.) affirmed the cure was inexplicable in the current state of medical knowledge. The Bishop of Cambrai recognized it on 15 August 1908. Tuberculosis was the leading cause of death before antibiotics. Rapid, complete cure without drugs is medically unexplained.
