What Was Truly Miraculous

Mrs Rose Francois suffered from fistular lymphangitis of the right arm with enormous oedema—chronic inflammation of the lymphatic vessels causing severe swelling. She was cured at Lourdes in 1899. Mgr Amette, Archbishop of Paris, recognised the cure as miraculous in 1908, among five cures declared that day (all subjects of Zola's novel about Lourdes).

Why It Can't Be Dismissed

The Lourdes Medical Bureau gathered documentation; the International Medical Committee (C.M.I.L.) affirmed the cure was inexplicable in the current state of medical knowledge. The Bishop of Paris recognized it on 6 June 1908. Chronic fistulas typically require surgery. Complete spontaneous closure of multiple fistulae is medically unusual.
