What Was Truly Miraculous

In September 2012, Paula Medina Zarate from Panama visited the Solanus Casey Center in Detroit. She had ichthyosis vulgaris—a genetic condition caused by filaggrin gene mutations, causing her skin to form thick, dry scales and bleed. There is no cure. While praying at Casey's tomb, she felt a sudden rush of intense heat and was instantaneously cured. She heard a voice: 'And you,' prompting her to pray for herself. The scales fell off. Modern dermatological exams and genetic evaluations confirmed a complete, scientifically inexplicable reversal of the skin condition. The Vatican selected this cure from many reported miracles as the beatification miracle because the clinical documentation was strongest. Pope Francis approved it; Solanus was beatified November 18, 2017, at Ford Field in Detroit.

Why It Can't Be Dismissed

Genetics do not reverse spontaneously. Ichthyosis vulgaris is caused by mutations in the filaggrin gene—there is no cure, and the condition is lifelong. Instantaneous reversal of a genetic skin disorder is medically unprecedented; the Vatican's Consulta Medica confirmed the cure was instantaneous, complete, lasting, and scientifically inexplicable. The Vatican had many reported miracles to choose from and selected this one because the dermatological and genetic documentation was strongest. Before-and-after clinical exams provide objective evidence. The case does not rest on subjective testimony alone; the biological impossibility of genetic reversal is the forensic core.
