What Was Truly Miraculous

The first cure "far away from Lourdes." Marie Moreau, 16, had contracted an inflammatory eye disease leading to severe visual impairment. After her father heard of Mrs Rizan's cure, he went to Lourdes for water. On 8 November the family started a novena. That evening Marie soaked a bandage with Lourdes water and tied it over her eyes. The next morning, 9 November, when she removed the bandage, her sight was fully restored. She resumed her studies at Bordeaux and later married at Aire-sur-Adour. The Bishop of Tarbes officially recognized the cure as miraculous on 18 January 1862.

Why It Can't Be Dismissed

The Lourdes Medical Bureau gathered documentation; the International Medical Committee (C.M.I.L.) affirmed the cure was inexplicable in the current state of medical knowledge. The Bishop of Tarbes recognized it on 18 January 1862. Chronic conjunctivitis with ectropion was declared incurable. Prof. Vergez certified the supernatural character of the cure.
