Peter Chungu Shitima — St. Luigi Scrosoppi
Zambia, Zambia · 20th Century

What Was Truly Miraculous
Peter Chungu Shitima, a student of the Oratory of St. Philip in South Africa, became critically ill with peripheral polyneuritis and wasting syndrome (cachexia)—end-stage AIDS complications. Doctors sent him home to Zambia to die. The case was highly documented by secular physicians in South Africa. The Oratorian community, parishioners, and his family prayed to Blessed Luigi Scrosoppi. Shitima dreamed of Padre Luigi, who assured him of healing. The next day he began to recover. He regained his health, returned to South Africa, and became a priest. The Vatican recognized this as the canonization miracle. Scrosoppi was canonized June 10, 2001. Scrosoppi is invoked for AIDS patients—'the saint of AIDS.'
Why It Can't Be Dismissed
Secular physicians in South Africa—not Church-affiliated—documented his terminal status. End-stage AIDS with polyneuritis and cachexia was typically fatal in the 1990s; these complications are irreversible. Sudden, complete recovery the day after his dream was medically unprecedented. Shitima returned to South Africa and became a priest, demonstrating the recovery was lasting. The diocesan tribunal gathered medical documentation from the treating physicians. The evidence does not depend on religious testimony; the secular medical documentation stands independently.
