James Fulton Engstrom — Fulton Sheen

What Was Truly Miraculous
On September 16, 2010, James Fulton Engstrom was born stillborn with his umbilical cord knotted around him, cutting off blood flow and oxygen. After 61 minutes without a heartbeat—during which medical personnel tried CPR, chest compressions, and two injections of epinephrine with no success—his heart suddenly began beating. His parents had prayed for the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Despite doctors' expectations that he would be blind, unable to walk or talk, and require tube feeding for life, James developed normally. A seven-member Vatican medical team unanimously approved the miracle in 2014. This is a 'resurrection-class' miracle—recovery after extended lack of pulse. James is now a healthy teenager. His mother documented the story in '61 Minutes to a Miracle.'
Why It Can't Be Dismissed
Sixty-one minutes without a heartbeat typically means certain brain death. The 61-minute duration is documented by medical personnel. Seven Vatican medical experts reported in 2014 that there is no natural explanation for James's survival and normal development. James is now a healthy teenager—the recovery was lasting. The Catholic Post, CNY.org, and National Catholic Register covered the case. The medical facts do not depend on Church approval; extended anoxia with full recovery defies established neurology.
