What Was Truly Miraculous

The first of a long series of "bone disease" cures. At 13, tuberculous arthritis started in her left knee, followed by a similar lesion in her left foot. Treatment by two doctors proved ineffective. She told one doctor of her intention to go to Lourdes; he agreed to postpone surgery until the end of August. On 30 August and 5 September 1891, the same doctors certified that the disease had been cured without sequelae. The Bishop of Tournai recognised the miraculous character in 1910.

Why It Can't Be Dismissed

The Lourdes Medical Bureau gathered documentation; the International Medical Committee (C.M.I.L.) affirmed the cure was inexplicable in the current state of medical knowledge. The Bishop of Tournai recognized it on 8 September 1910. Tuberculosis was the leading cause of death before antibiotics. Rapid, complete cure without drugs is medically unexplained.
