What Was Truly Miraculous

Sister Saint-Hilaire had chronic gastroenteritis from August 1903, resistant to all treatment. By February 1904 a swelling appeared; she became grossly emaciated (42 kg) with ever-more frequent loss of blood in the stools. She went to Lourdes with the National Pilgrimage. After the first Bath she felt reinvigorated, recovered her appetite, and realised after a few hours that she was cured. Three months later she weighed 62 kg. The Bishop of Rodez officially recognized the cure as miraculous on 10 May 1908.

Why It Can't Be Dismissed

The Lourdes Medical Bureau gathered documentation; the International Medical Committee (C.M.I.L.) affirmed the cure was inexplicable in the current state of medical knowledge. The Bishop of Rodez recognized it on 10 May 1908. Chronic gastroenteritis resistant to treatment does not typically resolve suddenly. The bishop declared it miraculous because it happened without medical treatment.
