What Was Truly Miraculous

In February 1964 Serge had his first neurological episode—right hemiplegia of sudden onset and regression. He had another in December 1968 with no regression. Investigation confirmed thrombosis in the left carotid artery; surgery was contra-indicated. By 1969 the insufficiency was bilateral. He went to Lourdes in 1969 and returned as bad as ever. In 1970 he joined the Pilgrimage from Anjou again. At the Ceremony of Anointing the Sick he began to feel sensation return. The Bishop of Angers officially recognized the cure as miraculous on 17 June 1978.

Why It Can't Be Dismissed

The Lourdes Medical Bureau gathered documentation; the International Medical Committee (C.M.I.L.) affirmed the cure was inexplicable in the current state of medical knowledge. The Bishop of Angers recognized it on 17 June 1978. Hemiplegia from stroke or nerve damage is typically permanent. Complete recovery is not a known outcome.
