What Was Truly Miraculous
Paul Pellegrin had a post-operative fistula following a liver abscess—an abnormal channel draining pus that had failed to close after surgery. Chronic fistulas typically require prolonged drainage or further surgery. He was cured at Lourdes on 3 October 1950. The Bishop of Fréjus-Toulon declared the cure miraculous in 1953.
Why It Can't Be Dismissed
The Lourdes Medical Bureau gathered documentation; the International Medical Committee (C.M.I.L.) affirmed the cure was inexplicable in the current state of medical knowledge. The Bishop of Fréjus-Toulon recognized it on 8 December 1953. Chronic fistulas typically require surgery. Complete spontaneous closure of multiple fistulae is medically unusual.
