Elisabete Arcolino — St. Gianna Beretta Molla
Brazil, Brazil · 20th Century

What Was Truly Miraculous
Elizabeth Arcolino was 16 weeks pregnant when her membranes ruptured and she lost all amniotic fluid. Her obstetrician, Dr. Nadia Bicego, recommended terminating—studies showed such pregnancies abort within 60 days. Elizabeth refused, prayed to Blessed Gianna, and carried to 32 weeks. Baby Gianna Maria was born healthy on May 31, 2000. Dr. Bicego testified: 'Contradicting all logic and science, this pregnancy continued without infection, without premature labor and without any fetal anomalies.'
Why It Can't Be Dismissed
The medical evidence is documented: membranes ruptured at 16 weeks, no amniotic fluid, studies showing such pregnancies abort within 60 days. Dr. Bicego recommended termination and later testified that the outcome contradicted 'all logic and science.' The Consulta Medica found the positive outcome 'unexplainable in medical terms.' Bishop Silva, Fr. Ovidio, and the parish community testified to Elizabeth's refusal of abortion and their prayers to Blessed Gianna. The decree was promulgated after the Congregation's medical and theological review—not merely 'because the Vatican approved it' but because the medical facts resist natural explanation.
