What Was Truly Miraculous

On April 28, 2001, Father Johnson Karnoor exposed the Blessed Sacrament for Eucharistic adoration at St. Mary's Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Chirattakonam, a village in Kerala, India. The adoration was part of a Novena to St. Jude Thaddeus.

During the adoration, Father Karnoor noticed three small reddish dots appearing on the surface of the consecrated Host. The dots were not present when the Host was placed in the monstrance. He photographed the Host and secured it.

Over the following week, the three dots gradually developed and expanded. By May 5, 2001, when Father Karnoor examined the Host again, the reddish markings had formed into a recognizable image: a human face that closely resembled traditional depictions of Christ crowned with thorns. The face showed clear features including eyes, nose, mouth, and what appeared to be marks of suffering.

Father Karnoor immediately reported the phenomenon to the diocese. The monstrance containing the Host was enshrined in the church, where it remains today.

Why It Can't Be Dismissed

  • Gradual development documented. Unlike an image that might be painted or stamped, the face appeared gradually over seven days, developing from three dots into a recognizable face. Father Karnoor documented multiple stages of the development.
  • Verified by the Archbishop of Trivandrum. His Beatitude Cyril Mar Baselice, Archbishop of Trivandrum and a senior hierarch of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, investigated the miracle and confirmed its authenticity. He stated: "For us believers what we have seen is something that we have always believed... If our Lord is speaking to us by giving us this sign, it certainly needs a response from us."
  • Featured in Vatican exhibition. The miracle is included in the Vatican's international exhibition of Eucharistic miracles, curated by Antonia Salzano Acutis of the Pontifical Academy for the Cult of Martyrs. This exhibition catalogs approximately 120 verified Eucharistic miracles worldwide.
  • Syro-Malabar context. The miracle occurred in one of the world's oldest Christian communities — the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church of Kerala, India, which traces its origins to the Apostle Thomas (c. 52 AD). The church is in full communion with Rome, and its ancient liturgical tradition lends institutional credibility to the investigation.
  • Host still accessible. The monstrance containing the miraculous Host remains enshrined in St. Mary's Church in Chirattakonam and can be viewed by pilgrims and visitors, allowing ongoing direct observation of the image.
